We are proud to present two brand new and exclusive cuts from the mighty Russ D AKA Disciples, one of the true originators of what has come to be known as “UK dub,” producing, remixing, and touring since the mid-80s.
“Freedom Fighter” is a militant steppers’ instrumental, crowned by a melodica lead that radiates conviction and resolve. “Dub Fighter” strips back the melodica and forwards driving, ricocheting percussion in its place. Russ’ signature sense of space, brightness, and total control over EQ and mix clarity are on full display here, just as they were on Jah Warrior’s “African King” (ZamZam 05, mixed by Russ D). This 7” is dialed for the dance, with timeless dub principles firmly established in the present. Already getting play from Iration Steppas and others on dubplate, this one is a future classic.
The Disciples name was bestowed by legendary sound system operator Jah Shaka in 1986 after Russ and his brother began supplying him exclusive tunes for his Sound. In the early 90’s the Disciples formed its own sound system, Boom Shacka Lacka (BSL), playing alongside the other big UK Sounds of the time, including Iration Steppas, Abashanti and Channel One. The BSL Sound ended in 1996, but Russ has carried on with a heavy DJ and production schedule that has taken him all over the world in the decade and a half since.
